Beat the Summer Heat with Philly Swirl Treats

Hello July! Are you enjoying your summer temperatures already? Just this week, we started with a 107F here in New Jersey. With the high temperatures and humidity, there's no more denying that the peak of summer is here.

Speaking of hot weather, one of the most common questions I get this season from fellow food allergy parents is what type of frozen treats to I give my kids. Well, here it is --- Philly Swirl.

Philly Swirl has been my food allergy kids' best friend for years. I can still remember the first time we discovered these colorful treats. While I was reading the labels of non dairy milk cartons, one of my boys who's looking through the glass case of frozen novelties said "I wish I could have ice pops again." Without even thinking, I asked and they replied,

"Is it gluten free? Yes!
"Dairy free?"        Yes!
"Nut free?"           Yes!
"Soy free?"           Yes!
"Egg free?"          Yes!

Are you sure? .... Yes!

I got really curious and headed their way. Can this be really true? Then after a thorough examination of the ingredient list, I gave in and grabbed a box of the Swirl Stix. The rest is history.

So, what makes Philly Swirl a big hit in our family? Well, aside from being food allergy friendly, these frozen treats are packed with flavor. Since each is made by combining two or even three types of Italian ices that go well together, one can expect a variety of flavor punch in each bite or scoop.

Child#1 and I are crazy over the Orange Dream as it reminds us of a Creamsicle. Child#2 loves the Cotton Candy and Mystery flavor. The Dad (yup, he likes these a lot because it's also fat free) enjoys the sour notes of Very Berry and Applelicious. As for the two boys, well, they like them all!

Another thing that we love about the Swirl Stix, Swirl Cups and Swirl Poppers is its smooth and almost creamy texture. While most ices and ice pops get really hard and actually turn into solid ice, these Philly Swirls remain smooth and silky. No breaking of teeth or plastic spoons here.

Now, here's something really exciting. The generous people from Philly Swirls would like to give a nice treat to Five (5) TFM Friends.  Each of those 5 lucky readers will receive a VIP Coupon to personally enjoy their favorite Philly Swirl product. Isn't that cool?

Get free entries now by doing those tasks below. This giveaway is open to all US residents and will end on Aug. 5, 2015 11:59 pm EST.

       Good luck!

Enjoying Tea Sampler Giveaway

Summer is officially in! As the kids and I are getting used to our new schedule, I also started a new routine - just for me. Every night, usually an hour or two after dinner, I would enjoy a big cup of my favorite tea and read at least three chapters of a book from my reading list.

For some, the new night routine is not much but for me, it made a big difference. Not only does it helped me calm down, it inspires me to accomplish more the next day.

Are you a tea drinker? I'm a big fan. Over the years, I have learned that there is a tea for every mood and need. A cup of tea can soothe any pain, relax or energize and even improve our emotions. With the different uses and benefits of drinking tea, I admit I've already built a quite a collection.

One of the biggest challenges I encountered when building my tea collection is the big quantity of tea I'm required to purchase. Since tea is one of  those items that we can't really try before buying, there were times when I ended up throwing away a bunch when I didn't like the taste or they went bad.

Then I was introduced to Enjoying Tea Sampler Kits. Each sampler kit contains 6-8 different types of tea. Depending on the size of the leaves, you will get between 0.5 oz and 1.5 oz per variety. That's good for at least 3 cups of tea. Each type of tea comes in its own square tin canister which is housed in a beautiful box. Prices start at $13.98 and varies depending on the type of teas included.

The Sampler Pack I received contains 6 distinct teas:

  • Jasmine Green Tea - Mild and refreshing, this green tea isn't bitter at all. I like it with some lemon juice for a cleansing effect.
  • Keemun Black Tea - Considered the finest of all black tea, Keemun is a nice treat to enjoy anytime of the day. I enjoy it full strength or with a splash of milk.
  • Roasted Mate Chai - My favorite! Usually, I often make my own chai from the recipe I learned from an Indian friend. The spice mix in this tea is really good. Quite rare for ready made mixes.
  • Earl Grey Black Tea - Earl Grey is one of the more common teas readily available in the market. Depending on the brand you get, it's taste can be subtle to none. This one however, is loaded with flavor and is not too bitter. The orange notes really come out during brewing.
  • Organic Slimming Oolong Tea - This has a smooth, nutty flavor and also great for iced tea. About the slimming claims, I'm not sure because I only tried it once and I haven't noticed any changes yet. Fingers crossed!
  • Vanilla Rooibos Tea   - Caffeine free with nice hint of vanilla & almond, it's great to as an after dinner dessert tea.

Did I entice you to start trying different flavors of teas? Well, I worry, the generous people from Enjoying Tea is happy to give a Sampler Pack to one lucky TFMFriend here in the US.

Simply follow the steps below to get some entries. No purchase necessary to join. This giveaway will end on July 10, 2015 11:59 pm EST.

       What are you waiting for?

Rebecca's Gluten Free Cookie Mixes Giveaway

I can't believe the school year is almost over. One more week and the kids will be home bound. You know what that means right? New routine, new activities and yes, time to make more memories.
With the nicer weather, I'm sure you wouldn't want to spend hours in the kitchen cooking for our always hungry children. Is it only me or have you noticed that the young ones tend to consume more food when they are home?

Anyway, since most of us who are managing food allergies have no choice but to make most of our food from scratch, I'm sure you will be very excited with my latest product find.

Rebecca's Gluten Free is a California based company that specializes in easy and delicious gluten free and vegan mixes. Currently, their signature items are their cookie mixes. It which available in these well loved flavors:
  • Snicker Doodle
  • Chocolate Crinkle
  • Chocolate Chip
  • Lemon Sugar
  • Pumpkin Spice
(Just a quick note: The product has a note that mentions it is processed in a facility that may contain peanuts and tree nuts.)

What makes Rebecca's Gluten Free cookie mixes different from most gluten free mixes out there is their "super easy" promise. That means we don't need to add more than 3 ingredients to make delicious cookies. Sounds good right?

For this review, I was sent a free Snicker Doodle cookie mix. Originally, the packaged asked for just one egg and 8 Tbs. of butter to add to the mix. Since my children can't have both, I decided to make a Flax goo (egg substitute) and Earth Balance Soy free Buttery spread.

With the help of my trusty electric mixer, I creamed the flax goo and buttery spread before I slowly added the cookie mix. The mixture was a bit crumbly at first but after a minute or two of mixing, it slowly came together nicely.

To make the cookies almost the same size, I used a small ice cream scoop. Then I rolled the dough into balls. Finally I coat each ball with the cinnamon sugar that was also include included in the mix. The mix gave me 26 pieces of 2 inch cookies.  Not bad for $6.99 a pack.

The end product!  As you can see, the cookies turned out nicely brown. Though it took a little longer to bake (I added 5 minutes to the suggested baking time.), the wait was definitely worth it. Not only are the cookies food allergy friendly and yummy, these without a doubt are the fastest ones to make.

It was given 4 thumbs up by the kids. They even emphasized that these cookies tasted like the ones they used to have (pre food allergy diagnosis). My husband and I agreed that Rebecca's Gluten Free Cookies are not only delicious but it can actually give the regular ones (egg, milk and wheat laden ones) a run for their money.

Taste and texture wise, no one can tell that these are gluten free and even vegan (I made substitutions remember?)

Don't just take my word for it. I have an exciting news. Rebecca has generously sponsored a giveaway for you my TFM Friends. One lucky reader will get a chance to win not one but three (3) cookie mixes! The best part, the winner will get to choose which flavors he or she would like to receive. Is that cool or what?

This giveaway is open to US residents, 18 years old and above. You don't need to purchase anything. Simple do the tasks below to get entries. The giveaway will end on June 20, 2015 11:59 EST. After that, the winner will receive an email from me.

So, what are you waiting for?

The Allergy Free Pantry Book Review & Giveaway

Did you know that May 2015 is a big month for us? The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) for years has declared it as "National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month". Also, the National Foundation of Celiac Awareness has chosen this month to be the "Celiac Awareness Month" as well. Wow! Talk about double celebrations.

To kick off these two significant campaigns,  I would like to share with you this book by Colette Martin called The Allergy Free Pantry.  Released last year (2014), this cookbook has become one of my good friends in the kitchen.

As we all know, one of the biggest challenges of living with food allergies is finding safe food. I remembered the first time I went grocery shopping after my children were diagnosed with their allergies.  I spent more than two hours reading labels.  After what seemed to be an eternity, I almost cried when I realized that there were only three items in my cart.

Since I can't go home with nothing to feed my family of 6, I breezed through the outer sides of the grocery store (the part where fresh fruits, vegetables and meats are located).  That's when it hit me.  If I want to keep my sanity and my family fed, I have to start cooking every food we eat from scratch.

I confess it was way easier said than done.  If you have been following my blog for a while, I'm sure, you are familiar with my meltdowns from pancakes to brownies and more.  Do you remember these brownies?

Basically, I spent the first twenty four months post food allergy diagnosis experimenting in the kitchen.  I can't imagine how much tears, money and time I've thrown away before I was able to come up with a decent repertoire of safe things to eat.

Then last year, when I learned about Colette'sThe Allergy-Free Pantry: Make Your Own Staples, Snacks, and More Without Wheat, Gluten, Dairy, Eggs, Soy or Nuts, my immediate response was "Where were you three years ago?"

This cookbook is a great resource for any person with food restrictions.  It contains 105 recipes of the most basic things we realize we take for granted. My favorite chapter is the condiments section. I can't believe how easy and cheaper it is to make my own food allergy safe mayonnaise, ketchup, ranch dressing and even barbecue sauce!

From breakfast, lunch, snacks and even treats, this cookbook will definitely make a food allergy mom's life so much easier.  It even includes so many tips on gluten free flour choices, egg substitutes, non dairy milk making, long term storage and even canning.

The instructions are simple and easy to follow. I'm even challenging myself to try to make homemade gluten free pasta and pizza crust. Yes! This book has a full chapter on this subject too.

Did I make you really curious?  Well, I talked to Colette and she's very happy to give a free copy of her book,The Allergy-Free Pantry: Make Your Own Staples, Snacks, and More Without Wheat, Gluten, Dairy, Eggs, Soy or Nuts  to one of my TFM Friends.  That's one of you my beloved readers. Simple check out the rafflecopter below for options on how to get free entries.

This giveaway is open to all US based readers ages 18 years old and up. It starts today May 11, 2015 and will end on May 24, 2015 11:59 pm EST.

Good luck and don't forget to share the giveaway to your friends as well.

       Have a great week!

Harvestland Review and $5 Coupon Giveaway

One of the most important outcome of my children's food allergies is our family's deeper awareness on what is in the food we eat.  During my elementary days, I remember being trained to eat a variety of foods specifically fruits, vegetables, meats/protein, grains and oil.  In order to be healthy, we should avoid processed foods and choose food which are closest to it's natural state.

When I learned that I'm expecting my first child, I tried to make sure I provide the healthiest possible for my child.  That included breastfeeding for more than one year exclusively, cooking more at home and even making my own baby food.  Call me crazy but I did that to all four children.

After the kids were properly diagnosed with food allergies.  I became more strict with their food.  This meant I have to read everything on the label and even call companies if some of the ingredients were not clear.

Can you imagine my horror when I found out that majority of the basics such as milk, vegetables and yes, fresh chicken, pork, turkey and beef were loaded with unnecessary additives like antibiotics, hormones, preservatives and pesticides?  Who knew that the "natural" foods we learned to be healthier are actually filled with toxic products? Even worse is the reality that we are buying and consuming products from sick animals.  Oh and don't get me started on the things going on for ground meat products.

Anyway, that's when I decided that no matter how I like bargains, I would be willing to pay an extra dollar or more on the quality of the products I'll buy.  What's the point of spending hours planning meals and home cooking if my ingredients aren't healthy to begin with?

That's why when I was contacted by Momsmeet to review Harvestland products, I was so thrilled.

Though Harvestland has a wide selection of precooked and processed (sausages, chicken patties), I decided to stick to their fresh raw chicken.  Why?  Well, I want to compare Harvestland to the brands that are cheaper.  For this review, I focused on my favorite whole chicken.

As a seasoned home cook, I noticed right away that the Harvestland chicken doesn't have a really thick fatty skin.  Yes, I'm one of those people who actually remove most (not all) of the chicken skin before cooking.  Sad to say, there were times when I felt that about 1/5 of the amount I paid for is being thrown away.

For the two whole chickens I have, I used one to make Indian Spiced Roasted Chicken and the other for Chicken Tinola.  One both recipes, I realized that each dish has produced lesser water or juices. That meant I was able to get more meat per weight.  Who wants to pay for extra water weight?

Was the a significant taste difference that my children can detect on those dishes?  Not really.  However, I'm glad they are actually eating not only a delicious meal but healthier as well --- no antibiotics, pesticides, steroids, hormones.  Don't just take my word for it.  Harvestland is USDA Process Verified.

Since it's almost Valentine's day, I would like to give you a simple treat.  I'm giving away a $5 Harvestland coupon to two (2) loyal readers here in the US.  The giveaway starts today and will end on Feb. 27, 11:59pm EST.

          Sounds good?

Gluten Free Around the World Cookbook Review & Giveaway

I remember the day when I first learned about Child#3's multiple food allergies.   We were at the Pediatric Gastroenterologist's office.  He was so surprised that my son never showed any hives in spite of the high numbers of the results.

Since he didn't want to make any drastic testings until the effects of food allergies are ruled out, he told me to remove all the food that my son is allergic to in our family's diet for at least two weeks or until he's seen by an Allergist.  At that time, he's allergens are wheat, dairy, egg, soy, nuts and peanuts.

"Are you kidding me?  What will my family eat? "  I'm sure I was not the first one to uttered those lines because he remained calm after my quite violent reaction.  He then asked me, "You are Asian right? (Is it obvious?) "I assume you were raised eating Asian food. Am I right?", he continued. After replying with two yeses, he smiled and said, "Good! Well, you can eat rice and stew.  I'm sure you know at least three kinds."

It was a light bulb moment for me.  For someone who's a self proclaimed food enthusiast, I'm fully aware that there are many Ethnic cuisines which traditionally don't require my son's allergens as an ingredient. That's when I started sharing about Child#3's dietary restrictions and asking for traditional recipes from my friends.

Then last year,  I came across Chef Aviva's new cookbook, Gluten Free Around the World . Though the availability of gluten free recipe books has gone a long way since my children were diagnosed, Chef Aviva's cookbook made me really excited.

With over 100 traditional gluten free recipe from countries like France, India, Italy, Ecuador, Morocco, Cambodia and more,Gluten Free Around the World is the ultimate buffet feast.  More than just a recipe compilation, this hard bound book is filled with beautiful non food pictures that show each country's unique culture.  Chef Aviva definitely did a great job "scrapbooking" her travels and giving us the ideas on how we can taste the food she had - gluten free of course.

Another thing I liked about this cookbook is that the recipes are easy to make. It doesn't require hard to find ingredients too.  Though there are some recipes that contain my children's other allergens, I can easily use a substitute for it with good results.  Some of my favorites are Moroccan Chicken, Layered Ratatouille and Sweet Potato Leek Soup.

Getting jealous?  Don't be.  I've talked to Chef Aviva about you and she generously agreed to give a copy of the Gluten Free Around the World Cookbook to three (3) of my dear friends residing here in the US.  (Sorry Canada and other international readers. I'm working on something for you soon.)

There's no need to purchase anything. Just look at the Rafflecopter box below to see how you'll be able to get entries.  This giveaway starts today and will end on Feb. 24, 2015 11:59 pm EST.

           Good luck!

MoPweeze Gluten Free, Vegan Cupcakes Giveaway

I am a big fan of local businesses.  That's why when I learned about MoPweeze Bakery during my GFAF Expo blogger stint last Fall, I didn't waste anytime connecting with them.  Quite a daunting task at that time since their booth was always packed with people sampling their yummy treats.

Anyway, what makes MoPweeze Bakery close to my heart aside from it being an NJ business is their product.  All their desserts are wheat/gluten, dairy, egg, soy, sesame and nut free. Happy dance Food Allergy friends!

According to its owner and head baker Christine, she started the company because she knew first hand how difficult it is to find delicious treats when one has life threatening allergies.  She and her husband have food allergies.  So are their two sons.  The biggest inspiration of MoPweeze came from her youngest son Maddox who is currently allergic to 19 foods and counting.

Above is the sampler pack Chris has sent (they deliver in the NJ area and ship nationwide) my family to try and review. It included flavors such as 'Jamaican Me Crazy' Blue Velvet, Gimmi Mo Banana Choco Chip and Janny's Chocolate Mint. Looks pretty right?

As you may know, Child #2 and Child#3 are high risk for having  Anaphylaxis for multiple food. That's why I made sure that MoPweeze's facilities are completely nut and peanut free.  On top of that, Chris assured me that all their flavorings and ingredients are vegan and gluten free.

You should see the excitement in Child#2 and Child#3's eyes when they saw the cupcakes and I actually told them that they can have a cupcake I didn't make.  Not that my cupcakes aren't good. They said they felt relieved that in case, I'm not able to make them a treat, they can also tell their dad what to buy for them.  Hmm.. these kids are getting smart.  What do you think?

When the kids and I tried the cupcakes, we were all surprised that the cake is moist and really flavorful.  The frosting is also light and not overly sweet.  Blue Velvet was hands down their favorite among the three flavors.  3 out of 4 liked the Chocolate Mint.  While Child#1 preferred the Banana Chocolate Chip.  As for me (the one with the sweet tooth and no known food allergies), I liked all of it.  Who says only those with food allergies can enjoy these cupcakes?

Since Valentine's Day is just around the corner, our friends from Mo Pweeze Bakery would like to give you a sweet treat.  They are giving away 4 Yum Yum Cupcake Jars to one lucky US reader. That's a total of 8 cupcakes (retail price of $32 + shipping).  You can choose up to four flavors as well.

What are you waiting for? Join now. This giveaway will end on Feb. 9, 2015 11:59 pm EST.
             Good luck!

Organic Gemini Tigernuts Review and Giveaway

Did the Chocolate Chip Blondies recipe I share earlier this week stirred some curiosity in you? I know I posted some ingredients that you might be a little hesitant to buy just for the recipe.  So, to make sure that you can try the recipe and of course, Tigernuts, I teamed up with Organic Gemini, the company that uses Tigernuts as a centerpiece of their products, for our first giveaway this year.  Are you getting excited?

What exactly are TigerNuts? It is a root vegetable (not a nut) that originates from Northern Africa and Mediterranean. For centuries, this tuber which is also known as nookon or chufa, has been a staple in some people's diet. This vegetable is loaded with fiber in the form of Resistant Starch, a prebiotic that actually helps our bodies develop probiotics.  Plus, it is rich in iron, potassium, phosphorus and Vitamins E & C.   Sounds good already?

Anyway, the people at Organic Gemini has sent me three of their best products to try. The TigerNut Raw Snack, is the purest it can be.  This raw and sun dried TigerNuts snack is vegan, paleo, Kosher, allergy free, gluten free and nonGMO.

The kids and I like that it is naturally sweet and has a nutty flavor as well. The snack however is really fibrous.  So be prepared to chew it for a while.  The manufacturers suggest to soak it first so that it becomes softer and to enhance the flavor.

I also received a bag of Organic Gemini TigerNut flour which is basically ground TigerNuts. This naturally gluten free flour is great for baking. It is not grainy and gives baked goods a hint of sweetness and nutty flavor.  I've used it on my Chocolate Chip Blondies and the results are always perfect. Oh, don't forget about the health benefits too.

If you are also avoiding dairy (and nuts) like us, I suggest you give these TigerNut Horchata a try.  Nutrition wise, these are way healthier than most dairy substitutes available in the market. It is naturally sweetened with either medjool dates, honey or fruits.  Yup, no added sugars! My kids love the Banana flavor.  I'm torn between the Chai and Coffee.  These Horchata are excellent for baking too.

Now for the exciting part.  Our friends from Organic Gemini would like to giveaway a gift pack of a full sized Raw Tiger Nut Snack and Tiger Nut Flour to one of our readers. What a great way to start the year right?

This giveaway is open to all US residents 18 years old and up.  It ends on Jan 23, 2015 11:59 pm EST.

           Good luck!

BearHug Delicious Vegan Cookies Giveaway

Christmas is just a few hours away. Since I can't personally hand you a gift for being super nice this year, I've teamed up with BearHug Bakery to send some treats to two lucky friends.  Isn't that sweet?

Just a little introduction, BearHug Bakery is a local business (Yay New Jersey!) that makes delicious vegan cookies.  I met this husband and wife team last November at a vendor show and they gave me some delectable Double Chocolate Chip cookies to try.  As you may know, I'm not new to vegan cookies.  Since my children tested positive for food allergies, we've all looked around for safe treats.

Below is the photo of the cookies they gave us.  Due to my children's multiple food allergies, they custom made a gluten free version of their bestseller just for us.

As you can see, their vegan cookies look so much like (or even better) most regular cookies. The top is quite crunchy while the inside remains soft and chewy.  It is not overly sweet and is packed with so much flavor. You wouldn't miss the eggs, butter and even dairy found in traditional cookies. Since they don't use any preservatives, we can all be sure that each piece is freshly made.

Here's their second flavor, Almond Mayhem.  Unfortunately, I wasn't able to taste these because our home is nut free.  Ah! TheFrugalistaMOM's Food Allergy Coupons Giveaway

A few more weeks and 2014 is over.  Can you believe it?  It may sound a cliche but the year did flew right before my eyes.

Before I get caught up with the holiday rush, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for being with me throughout the year.  Your company has inspired me to continue writing (which I love so much), experiment in the kitchen for new recipes and enjoy food allergy safe product hunting and testing (a task that I'm beginning to be fond of).

I confess maintaining a blog is not an easy task.  Though I can't run out of content to share, the posting process is always a struggle. As the kids grow older, I realized the hard way that their food consumption exponentially increases. Thus, extra time must be allotted in the kitchen. Ah, if only there's a way, I could cook and blog at the same time.  Any ideas?

To be really honest, there were times too when I thought about not blogging anymore.  Between the cooking, shopping, mommy duties and personal goals, it is quite a challenge to carve that coveted writing hour.  During those I consider dark moments,  I would receive a question from a reader about a recipe, a company would reach out for me to review their new food allergy friendly product or a random follower will send me a quick thank you message.  These simple gestures remind me that I must have been doing something right.  It reassures me that I was put in this position by God because He has a mission for me.

Thank you so much for sticking with me this year. I really appreciate all the support and kind words you keep on sending me.   You have not only made our family's food allergy journey more bearable.  In fact, you all helped me looked more on the brighter side of things.

To show, how much I appreciate you, I'm starting a series of giveaways this month.  To start with, I'm giving away a part of my coupon stash to one lucky follower to enjoy.  It's over $20 worth of coupons!  Some of it are even subject to an amount match (depends on where you shop).  I'm pretty sure it will come handy.

Coupons included are:
Ian's Natural Foods, Dole Garden Soup, Plentils, Ola! Granola, Purely Elizabeth, Freedom Foods, So Delicious, Soy Joy and Raw Revolution.

This giveaway is open to US residents and will end on Monday (December 15, 11:59 pm EST).

         Good luck!

Amrita Endurance Bars Review & Giveaway

Happy November! It's been a while since we had our last giveaway and I'm sure you are missing all the freebies already right?  Since this is my birthday month too, I prepared a special treat just for you. Starting this week, I have lined up a series of  giveaways from some awesome and really generous food allergy friendly companies.    Sounds good?

To begin the gift giving streak is a product called Amrita Bars.  I first learned about these food allergy friendly vegan bars at the GFAF Expo in NJ.  Their founder Arshad Bahl, was present at vendor booth and is very passionate about sharing the story behind the product.

Named after the Sanskrit word which means "nectar of the gods", Amrita Bars are made from raw, sun ripened dried fruits and seeds.  Each Amrita Endurance or Recovery Bar is vegan, non gmo and does not contain any of the top 8 allergens such as  wheat/gluten, tree nuts, peanuts, soy, dairy, egg, fish or shellfish.  A big relief to most food allergy moms like me.

Aside from the health benefits, my kids and I liked the Amrita bars because they are really flavorful and delicious.  The dried fruits are sweet but not overpowering.  The texture is smooth and creamy.

So far, my favorites are the Mango Coconut and Chocolate Maca.  Eating Amrita Bars is like having dessert without the guilt.  If there's such a thing as "good for you" treat, this is it.

Getting intrigued already?  Well, our wonderful friends from Amrita Health Foods would like to treat one lucky US based reader a 6 pc. variety pack.  Scroll down now to see how many chances you can get.

What are you waiting for?  This giveaway will end on Nov. 19, 11:59 EST.

        Good luck!

Brothers All Natural Fruit Clusters Review & Gift Pack Giveaway

Wow it's October 1st! What could be better than starting this month with a giveaway right?  I'm sure you'll be pretty excited with this new product I'm sharing with you today.

As a mom of 4, I am always looking for better snack ideas to keep my children fed throughout the day. Even though I'm a big fan of homemade treats, I confess, I do rely on packaged products as well to help me keep up with my family's growing demand.

Though store shelves are lined with what seems like endless array of products, finding something that is food allergy safe, nutritious and the kids would actually eat is still a little challenging.  Did I mention that most organic snacks are even pricier too?  So, when I was contacted to try Brothers All Natural's new freeze dried fruit snacks, I didn't even winked.

One of the products that caught my attention on the Brothers All Natural's website is their line of Fruit Clusters.  I was quite familiar with freeze dried fruits but these clusters are something new. What exactly are they?  Brothers All Natural Fruit Clusters fruit snacks are made of best quality fruits picked at the peak of ripeness, cut into pieces, freeze dried and rolled into 1/2 inch bite sized clusters.

These Fruit Clusters are 100% fruit and without added sugars, additives or preservatives.  It is free of the Top 8 common allergens such as wheat/gluten, soy, peanut, nuts and dairy.   Aside from that, it is Non-GMO Project certified, vegan and OU Kosher certified as well.

Among my 4 kids, Child #2 is the pickiest fruit eater. Unlike her 3 siblings who prefer fresh, dried or frozen fruits over any cupcake at any given time, Child #2 is the total opposite. Just how picky?  Well, if you ask her if she eats any fruit, she'll say "Yes!  I love apple pie, banana muffins, peach marmalade, mango Italian ice."  Mind you she's already 9 years old.  Do you get the picture?

Anyway, Child #3 who's a big fruit eater, (The one who says that the only reason he's not a vegan is me torturing him to eat meat for extra protein.), first tasted the Fruit clusters. He described it as apple cinnamon flavored popcorn. Crunchy and naturally sweet, I find these bite sized treats a way better option than a bag of sugar loaded caramel popcorn.

His non stop munching caused the other kids to be curious.  After my eldest and youngest each gave the Fruit Clusters a thumbs up, Child#2 eventually gave in.  She tried one which led to another and another and another.  Finally, she realized she finished a whole bag.  A big surprise from someone who's known as a non fruit eater!

When I asked her why she liked the Fruit Clusters.  She said that it is like eating popcorn that tastes like Apple Pie.  Not just a regular apple pie, a really good one.

Since the official tasting, Brother All Natural Fruit Clusters has become a staple in the children's lunch box.  It works well as a quick mid day snack for my Kindergartner and 2nd Grader.  The older ones like it as dessert that comes along with their lunch.

I like that each 1.25 oz resealable bag contains 6 servings of fruit.  It can easily be divided so that every child gets a portion or more. Plus it come in three flavors - the kids' favorite Apple Cinnamon, Blueberry Apple and my personal choice Raspberry Apple.

Did I get you curious?  Well, our generous friends from Brothers All Natural has agreed to sponsor the prize for this giveaway.  One lucky reader (must be a US resident) will win his or her choice of 8 Fruit Cluster packs which will be shipped directly to his or her home for free. Isn't that cool?

What are you waiting for?  The giveaway ends on Oct. 13, 2014 11:59 pm EST.

           Good luck!

- Roz

(Note:  I received free products to try and review for this post.  This however, hasn't affected my opinions about the brand.  See my full disclosure here.)

Send Me Gluten Free Box Review & Giveaway

One of the toughest part of dealing with food allergies is finding products that are safe to eat. During my earlier days of FA living, I would spent hours at the grocery store, reading labels and even surfing the internet while shopping (thru my phone) just to make sure that whatever I'm buying is good for my children.  Gluten (wheat, barley, rye, spelt) in particular is quite challenging because it is present in almost everything packaged - food, cosmetics, medicine, bath and cleaning products and more.

If you think you're the only one who can't put anything in your shopping cart, well news flash, you are not alone.  I remembered feeling tired and frustrated from hanging out in the store too much. To add more insult to the injury, many times, the kids would not eat the prime commodity that I just spent hours finding.  Why? "It simply doesn't taste good." they insist.

A lot has changed since my children's diagnosis almost 5 years ago.  Now, there are more options available.  However, a familiar anxiety still lingers and that is if the kids will actually eat it.  Then I was introduced to Send Me Gluten Free Box.

Send Me Gluten Free is a monthly subscription box that is filled with 8-12 gluten free products conveniently delivered to your home.  Though is it quite new in the market, the company behind Send Me Gluten Free has been actively helping the community for years.  In fact, they are the same people behind the largest and fastest growing specialty diet consumer events in the US, the Gluten and Allergen Free Expo (GFAF Expo). According to them, Send Me Gluten Free is an "expo in a box."

Above are the contents of my complimentary Send Me Gluten Free August box.  As you can see, there's not just one but two full sized products in the box. I have seen the Explore Asian Black Bean spaghetti at Costco for months now.  Though I was really curious, I didn't have the courage to buy it because it was in bulk. Same thing with Sevierly Good Gluten Free.  Did you know that the exact Brownie mix retails for $9.99 alone?

Here's my September Send Me Gluten Free box (also complimentary).  This generous box contains 11 products. Aside from the body wash from SoapBox soap company (I reviewed their products before.) and the Schar brand, I have to admit, I was not familiar with these items.

Oh before I forget, each box also includes coupons and coupon codes from various companies.  I find this really helpful because as we all know, it is not easy to find these specialty coupons.

Another thing that I think is unique and like about the SMGF is the fact that they offer subscription plans. Depending on your currently budget, they have a Month by Month, 3 Months, 6 Months & 12 Month options.  Of course, there are discounts available for each option.  Plus, shipping is always free. Sounds interesting?

Now for the good part.  I have asked the wonderful people of Send Me Gluten Free to give you, my beloved readers some treats.  First, you all can get a 20% discount on any subscription plan you choose.  Simply us the coupon code BLOG20 during checkout.

Next, they are sponsoring a giveaway! Yes, I am giving away a FREE Send Me Gluten Free box to one lucky reader.  That's a $30 prize filled with gluten free goodies and coupons.

This contest is open to all US residents 18 years and older.  It will end on Sept. 24, 2014 at 11:59 EST.  So, what are you waiting for?  Get your entries now and don't forget to share the love.

        Good luck!

Review & Giveaway: Ola! Foods Granola

It has been a roller coaster week!  From trying to squeeze in some last minute summer activities, preparing for the kids' first day of school, managing the household and yes, stealing some time to "work", I can't blame myself for sleeping on the couch the last 2 nights.  What?  At least, I was able to get some snooze.

Anyway, today I finally had some undivided hours to finish the endless drafts I have sitting on my computer. This one for sure will get you really excited.

Have you heard about the company called Ola! Foods?  Before the GFAF Expo last year, I haven't either.  However, after meeting it's founder, Dina Houser in their booth, I couldn't help but not only enjoy their delicious products but support their very generous cause as well.

For starters, Ola! Foods is a Connecticut based business that makes 100% natural granola. Aside from being completely gluten free, their products only contain minimal ingredients that we, consumers can immediately understand.  It is lightly sweetened with pure maple syrup which makes it healthier than most commercially available brands.  By using only the best pure ingredients, they were able to create their granola really flavorful and yes guilt free addictive.

Ola! Granola comes in 4 yummy flavors namely Cranberry Orange Pecan, Vanilla Almond, No Nut Vanilla and our family's favorite Chocolate Banana Chip.  Since we are NUT Free at home, the company sent me the last two varieties to try.

At first, I was quite hesitant to give let the kids (except for for Child#1 who outgrew her nut allergies) to try it.  This is mostly because of the Allergen warning that says "Ola Foods follows good manufacturing practices to segregate ingredients to avoid cross contact with allergen.  Made in a facility that uses Tree Nuts.  However, after some testings, I found out that it was safe for the other kids to eat as well.  Yay! Happy dance!

Since that revelation, it became a staple in my pantry and even baked goods.  Shhh... it's the secret ingredient of the Chocolate Banana Bread that was a big seller at last year's Bake Sale Fundraiser.

Another important thing why I'm passionate about Ola! Foods is their commitment to not just provide healthy and yummy snack options but to help disadvantaged youth, their families and communities.  Did you know that all of their net profits (Yes you got that right 100%) are donated to BeFoundation?  This organization provides grants to support the education of disadvantage kids. They provide funding for education innovations, exposure to arts and music, nutrition for the body & mind and most importantly community development and involvement.

By supporting Ola! Foods, we are not just getting healthier physically, we are also making a change to make the future generations a lot better.  Is that cool or what?

Now for the best part of this post.

Our friends from Ola! Foods would not only like you to try their products. They are helping you stock up this back to school season.  One lucky reader will get an Ola!Foods Gift Pack worth $45. This includes:

        (1) Ola Tote Bag
        (1) 9 oz bag of No Nut Vanilla  Granola
        (1) 9 oz bag of Banana Chocolate Chip Granola
        (1) 9 oz bag of Vanilla Almond Granola
        (1) 9 oz bag of Cranberry Orange Pecan Granola
        (2) Trays of the 1 oz Grab and Go Singles

Isn't that a big treat?  Oh before I forget, this giveaway is open to all US Residents only.  What are you waiting for join now.  This giveaway will end on Sept. 16, 11:59 pm EST.

Gluten and Allergen Free Expo 2014 in NJ Ticket Giveaway

A few more days and it's September! You know what that means right? The Gluten and Allergen Free Expo is back in New Jersey.

For those who are not aware of this extraordinary affair, the GFAF Expo is the largest and fastest growing special diet consumer event in the US.  If you are in the Tri-State area, I suggest you block the dates Sept. 6 and 7, 2014 now and schedule to go to The Meadowlands in Secaucus, New Jersey. I promise you, it is worth every effort.  That's coming from someone who had attended both days of the expo.

So, what makes the GFAF Expo really special especially to us who are dealing with food allergies and gluten intolerance? Well, the $15 adult day pass ($3 for kids) will give you access to:

1. Over 150 vendor booth exhibitors.  Click for the full list.
You'll be amazed how many companies are actually catering to our special needs.  From cereals, breads, snacks to make up, mobile apps and even beers, the whole day isn't enough to check all of them.

2. Free Product Samples
Have you ever seen a gluten free or food allergy product on the store shelves but is hesitant to buy because you're not sure if it is worth the extra cost? Well, you're in luck! Almost all the vendors at the expo have samples for you to try their products for FREE. Last year, I was so stuffed that I didn't need to eat morning snack, lunch and even after snack during the event.  The best part is that you are most welcome to bring the samples home.

3. Coupons and Discounted Prices
I don't know about you but finding coupons for food allergy friendly coupons are very challenging.  In fact, you'll barely any on the Sunday paper.  Sure you can print some online one time or twice. That's it.  During the expo, the exhibitors are really generous in giving out their coveted coupons. There are even some vendors who directly sell their products at a huge discount.

Last year, I did major grocery shopping at the GFAF Expo. There were products sold at 20-50% off the retail price!  Just a little tip. If you would like to shop, bring cash with you because some vendors don't have access to credit card processing.

4. Informative Classes
As part of your admission ticket, you will have access to free classes from selected experts on the field of food allergy and gluten free living.  Check out the time and schedule here.

5. Meet the Authors and Company Representatives
Do you have a favorite gluten free or food allergy author?  Have you ever tried to reach a certain company?  This is your chance to personally meet them. You'll be able to get answers immediately and even have a selfie with them.

Want to meet me in person? As an official blogger, I will be there too.  Though most of the time, I'll be going from one vendor to the next to cover the event, I'm more than happy to meet you there. Just send me a quick message so that I can keep you posted where I am at a particular time. Also, let's connect twitter.

So, are you getting excited to go to the GFAF Expo this year? I have not one but two treats for you.  First, you can enjoy a 20% discount on an admission ticket just for being my friend. Simply use the coupon code EXPONJ20 when you purchase a ticket online
